No reponse from app.

Post by vishal_19 on Fri Apr 08, 2016 7:57 am

I am new to the field of Electronics. I have made the ESP car. I did every thing as directed on ESP8266 RC car project website. I just haven't connected the firmware update, because I didn't understood what that is. The problem I am facing is the app gets connected to the ESP module, but doesn't responds to it. Nothing happens when I slide the slider or tilt the phone. I am not able to detect the problem.
Please help if I went wrong somewhere in it.

Thanks. :-)

Hi,
Here is what a firmware means in general:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware

In order for the RC car to work, you have to write the LUA or the Arduino code from the project page to the ESP. That code receives the commands from the app and controls the motors.

The Arduino code is like a new firmware for the ESP.
The LUA code, however, runs on a firmware called NodeMCU.

To write the Arduino code or the NodeMCU to the ESP, you have to connect the "firmware update" jumper before powering up the ESP, so it enters firmware update mode (allowing you to upload another program to it).

i did upload the arduino program available on your website. i was able to understand how code works and uploaded it successfully. i connected the roboremo app by putting the password and port in it. still facing the same problem... last night working i roughly concluded may be it is because of not having enough power supply to the ESP... would u please tell what value of current should i supply to ESP to properly work it.

I did it....!! It was due to low power supply. Now its working properly.... And I understood what the firmware update is for too....

Thank you Roboremo :-)

Hi,
I didn't know exactly how much current it draws, a quick search gave me this:
http://bbs.espressif.com/viewtopic.php?t=133
so it is 170mA.
I am using MCP1702T3302 regulator, which can give maximum 250mA.
I am glad to hear that it works now Smile

Would just like to say WELL DONE to vishal_19 for sorting out what must be a common project problem.

I've found that LM1117's are great too, with 10uF caps on the input and output. Good for 800mA I believe.
If working with the Arduino IDE and likely having Arduino's, a Nano works fine with connection to the 3.3V.
For data transfer, connect RST to GND and then the Arduino will pass firmware etc through its RX and TX pins Smile
Also an FTDI 232 USB/Serial board directly connected to the power pins works.
ESP's tested have been ESP-01 and ESP-03.

Nice tip Smile I was using a sketch that makes pin 0 and 1 inputs for that, but your solution is easier.
